    I can say though that one of the ones I have uses a "captive key" system in which you can not remove the key unless the latch is actually locked, which ensures that you can not walk away from the cabinet with your key/s leaving it unlocked. Not an unreasonable "feature".

    The safe I just sold was the same, I thought it was made that way on purpose

    Yep, the way you guys explain it I can see the logic in that feature but I still wish I could extract the key. The safe is positioned into a corner and I cannot open the door to full extent with the rather long protruding key hitting the adjacent wall which also stops the door from quite fully opening. I can live with it but as a potential plan B am thinking I might visit my mechanical mate with welding gear and ask if he can chop a bit of length off the key and reattach the head. Might be the way around this.
