Shots were fired at surfers in the waters off the west coast by someone police believe took exception to using "their waters".

Two friends and one of their sons were out surfing off the Taharoa coast, south of Kāwhia, last Thursday when they were shot at.

One of the bullets hit the water about two metres away from the high school student.

Waikato police Senior Sergeant Mike Henwood confirmed the incident, saying the group had taken jetskis out to go surfing off Te Māika point last Thursday morning.

They were on their boards when they reported being shot at from shore, he said.

Terrified, the group left the area.

Kawhia police Constable John Maoate believes someone has taken exception to "strangers" using "their" water, he said in a Waikato police post.

The shots allegedly come from the bush and was possibly from someone out hunting.

Maoate is now looking for help in the case. Anyone with information can call Kawhia police on 07 871 0827.

Information can also be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

THAT is extremely serious.

She's a pretty "feral" area over there.

And people wonder why the public calls for tighter firearms laws, with idiots like this around, you can bet it was a license holder.

Maybe the cops should have a walk around that patch of bush and see what else in growing in there.

No need to call early shots right this moment. There's no evidence yet that it was even a licence holder and there are plenty of people across the country who are unlicensed and that have firearms.

Not having ago at people who play by the rules, more a comment on how we let ourselves down, it could have been some feral without a license, I suppose my first post was tinted by the fact, that a fellow hunter was shot at as he got out of his ute by a 22.250 ( they found the case on the track from where the shooter was parked) apparently he thought they were cattle rustling ?

Oi, some of us ferals that grew up in that area aren't that feral and are only a little bit inbred.
