I had to use the registry recently. Was holding off for as long as I could. But the inevitable happened and and I had to.
Online was relatively simple. They just haven't made it very streamlined for listing a number then submitting all at once. Instead you have to answer all their bloody legal disclaimers etc everytime you enter 1.
And of course the wildcat cals aren't recognized so you have to ring them anyway.
1st fella I got really couldn't be bothered and was a right cock to say the least. I ended up hanging up on him.
Next time I rung the guy was very helpful but it did take a while as their database didn't have what I have.
And also as a side note, any transfers of ownership can only be done if you ring them.
And the seller has to initiate the transfer, not the purchaser.
After talking with the fella for a bit it was very obvious, he even said it, they really have no idea what they're doing as its all so new and is going to be a clusterf**k
Thanks for the update. I think...
Greetings,
I see that the discussion document is out for Rifle Ranges. It seems to be a long way from the open slather that operated prior to 2020.
GPM.
If it is focused on public and firearms user safety, easing the operational burden on the volunteers that run the clubs and range committees and allows range officers greater protection to do their work in keeping the ranges operating and improving the general skill base across the firearms user groups what's not to like?
Now that I've had more interaction with the registry I have a bit more experience of where it goes wrong. Basically anything to do with transferring ownership is a shit show.
Some people are not registering their firearms accurately. The issue is that you often can't find the firearm you're searching for, so I guess people tend to pick whatever the closest match is and run with that. Ringing them up to enter something manually is a massive pain in the ass that puts people off, but even when you do that they frequently get the details wrong too. This is based on my own experience and mates I've spoken to.
I've had one occasion where I've purchased a rifle that was incorrectly registered in their database, so have rung up to ask them to amend it. After all I am liable for hundreds of thousands in fines plus prison time if I knowingly enter incorrect information into the registry. In doing so they created duplicate entries and left them attached to my name. So now when I ring up to deal with them, they always tell me that I own more firearms than I actually do (despite my ringing up multiple times to try correct their records). They outright refuse to remove any duplicates from my profile because this is a feature that is apparently part of their audit trail.
Now for the rest of my life, any interaction I have with police / FSA is going to require my explaining the whole story over and over. All because their fucking shithouse system was launched before it was fit for purpose. I only have a small collection but I shudder to think at what large collectors will have to go through with FSA.
I will celebrate largely when this system is eventually removed.
@Fatburg
When you call them to request details get fixed and/or deletion of a duplication, Record the whole conversation, I'm not sure about the legality of this but I loaded an app after a car crash and recorded the abusive calls etc. It was a help assigning fault etc and peace of mind for myself in case the lumpy stuff hit the fan later.
We've been eharing these stories for years from B, C and E cat guys, firearms ownership transfers causing all kinds of headaches. From what you're saying it seems this will be the universal experience for everyone who buys and sells firearms. Something to look forward to! Best solution might be to buy more guns and just get more gunsafes rather than sell any:P
I printed of copies of all my rifles recorded on the register and filed them.
Having recently sold a rifle I photographed the registered details of that rifle minus any personal info and emailed it to the new owner so they can register it exactly how I did.
Just had a look and its still registered to me so I'm guessing the new owner hasn't done their part yet. Unfortunately the FSA do not record that you have rung up to to tell them you have sold a rifle.
Purchased a 308 recently which activated the registration , I did it over the phone and it was pretty painless. Just hope the records are safe and stay that way.
That's what I figured. There will either be KPIs to get x amount registered in y time, or political pressure from police heirarchy to get the most possible registered to make it seem like it is successful.
Of course, if it is corrupted data it is totally useless, but that's clearly not a concern ir being reported on.
Helpful into to some
I had a couple of new old guns to register this morning
Rang FSA at about 9:30am and got through without waiting a single second !!!!!
Very helpful woman and had s decent chat about wait times.
She told me Monday mornings are now the quietest part of the week.
And to avoid Friday's
So do your business Monday mornings
Went to register my guns , found my cell phone number is already in use apparently...... ? Bit confused about that , as this is my first attempt at registering.
Next question is , Do I have to ring them about my 308 weatherby Vanguard. On the list there is a weatherby but no weatherby Vanguard ?
My 303 enfeild was easy to do though , listed as a sporter lol.
Any help greatfull received .
Cheers
Finally had to join due to change of address. All smooth enough for the most part, except for one I had to call in that they didn’t have in the models list.
Helpful, friendly staff.
One point of note -
I had a draft that I had started and saved, but not submitted.
This was fully visible to them.
Actually I have had the same problem, being a bit online illiterate that is.
Not with this site, actually IRD, they are fully aware of your submission but if you don't follow through pushing that last button ...penalties follow.
I found out chatting to the FSA person I dealt with this morning that there is a new option which is "Assisted Registration"
For larger collections or non computer guys
They will accept an emailed data base and a nominated and approved person to represent the collection owner.
No mention of that on their website - which hasnt been updated since early June anyway
Did the job this morning, had more hassles with resorting my "REALME" that the registry.
Yes Realme was more of a problem than using the Registry, dealing with FSA has been easy and straightforward.
Unless they make mandatory the part about taking the form plus photo to police in order for you to get visibility of what is registered in your name, a lot of people are going to be ignorant to the registry being wrong until it eventually becomes an issue.
Did mine by phone this morning, No waiting no real issues other than model can be a bit iffy
Just been talking to a customer thats just done the registration thing. Hes lost when it comes to using a computer so after a couple of days trying ended up doing it over the phone. The biggest joke he said was getting a real me account. He just rang up and they gave him one no checks whatsoever to even see if it was really him....
I rang because I find the whole Real me thing a major PIA.
They wanted to know my address, full name etc and obviously my firearms license number but easy as.
@jusepy81 Wrote, "Went to register my guns , found my cell phone number is already in use apparently...... ?" I had exactly the same problem. Reason: At some stage in my life I had created (or partly created) a RealMe identity, using my current cell phone number. Something to do with GETS or a job application, I forget... Solution: Phone RealMe (don't try to use the internet WOFT!) explain the situation. They can see your previous identity and will simply DELETE it while you are speaking with them. Over the phone RealMe staff are fantastic to deal with and very helpful (don't try to use the internet WOFT!)
Also @Jusepy you wrote, "Do I have to ring them about my 308 Weatherby Vanguard." Legally, maybe not, but if your rifle is stolen or lost, and you want to get it back, I suggest you give them as much information as possible, so yes phone them and update model details.
Just on that I think their system does not collect enough information like, Blued or Stainless? Fluted or not? Iron sights? Picatinny rail? Threaded? Muzzle brake? Stock; style, wood or synthetic, if synthetic, colour? Make, model, serial number of suppressor, optics (daylight, thermal, night vision?) and the list goes on... I gave them all of this information, so if they find my scope, they can trace it back to my rifle, then back to me and (Hopefully) return it. (I might be dreaming there....)
"Victory loves preparation!" So before I phoned FA to register my rifles, I made a spreadsheet with all the relevant information which they require and all the relevant information which I wanted recorded. The person who I was speaking with said, "You are answering all of my questions before I ask them and you are doing them in the same order as my form? How is it you are doing that?" I went on line and copied their format before I phoned! So, you quote Lord Baden-Powell, "BE PREPARED!" And don't make it a drama for yourself.
@wekaman you wrote, "the registry being wrong until it eventually becomes an issue." You are correct, so however you register your firearms and accessories, go back into the system in 24 - 48 hours and read through the recorded details. If any detail is incorrect, and if there is not an EDIT function, phone them and they will correct it whilst talking with you. Easy!
Last note: I don't do any of my firearms compliance on line! I phone and speak with a real human being. Without exception if have found both RealMe and Firearms Registration team very, very helpful and pleasant to deal with. If you personally have a beef with the Police and/or Politicians, please don't take it out on the font line office staff, they are there to help YOU!
So who's had to supply photographic information with their registration of obscure or maker unknown firearms ?
I've just had to provide images for a number of items in my registration that clearly do not exist in the FSA data base.
Full length image
Action image
All visible markings and numbers images
had my daughter make up a spread sheet of my collection with all details .wonder what would happen if i email it to em saying here ya go enter it as you are employed to do??
@Hugh Shields post clarified the whole sorry situation for me.
Positive intelligent, orderly, well organised and respectfully helpful.
I know who I’d rather spend a day on the hill with.
Cheers MG
Oh boy could I tell you a current story that I am embroiled in (refer to my last post in the “Things you hate” thread). I will expand on it when I have prevailed but suffice it to say that I am not happy and using your vernacular the wee spotty Herbert’s that are all of the adjectives I used in that post are learning their pedigree from a master wordsmith.
