Sorry guys should have mentioned I would like a versatile breed due to me doing a fair bit of deer stalking, prefer short coat too. Only reason I mentioned a cocker is the missus lives them so there wouldn't be much pressure to take it chasing deer...

Have thought about it WH but really would like a pointing breed... The versatility would be a great advantage.

Yeah have considered them thanks. Not really my thing, tend to be bigger dogs, not a fan of the rough coat and the temperament is a little stronger than id like. There is also a DDbreeder here in PNth. Not sure how those DK's compare temperament wise @kawhia?

Ok a fair while ago I hunted far north NZ over a pointer tea tree pheasant wide open spaces awesome.
Dog went out wide and far. Pointed you walked up flushed shot to the point.
Her in the UK I've a cocker, I have him hunt in close no more than five meters you hunt gun up. Or what I call gun quarter.
Almost in the pocket of your shoulder. The dog flushes you shoot.
So it's two differant shooting styles. Two differant hunting scenarios. Also two differant dogs.
I started with Labs on a pond when I was six. You need to look at your Terran and chose the dog that suites your situation, family, hunting style and yout livening situation.
Every body, plus dog is differant.
To me so long as he's your mate your half way there all else is a bonus

I don't want to talk you into a wire, but the new dogs we have are smaller and shorter coated than the typical kiwi gwp, have a better temp and better instinct for pointing and water work.... you are welcome to hook up for a hunt next season to see them in the field.

the DK litter due very soon will be very interesting as it is the first litter of purebred german lines bred to stay out of the nzkc gene pool, the bitch fender in med size and a strong pointer and retriever.
the owner is looking for homes with hunters keen to put them through the jghv system, which will mean ongoing training support to get the most from the pup will be available, fender has a great temp.

I've never really had a problem with the gsp coat with cold or water, in fact over heating is probably more of a risk to me it would seem in the sunny north island

and a shorter coated DD, I think the body shape and build difference is there if you look hard enough.

I'm not a fan of these shorter coated wires from what I've seen myself. I think they are getting so close to a GSP that you might as well just get one of them.

That is just my view.

The shorter haired WH's coats still seem to be wirery and thatched. I'm sure they would be a lot warmer and water proof than the GSP.

I can't stand those wooly pig looking GWPs you saw a lot of maybe 10 years ago. I reckon those smooth hard coated wirehairs that are coming in are the ducks nuts. All the advantages of a wire haired coat without out the negatives
