Thread: Book(s) on selecting and training a hunting dog

Looking for recommendations on proven books on selecting and training a hunting dog. By hunting dog I mean indicating and finding, and ideally retrieving. I don’t shoot birds, so more the Dundee / Bo style hare retrieval machine.

Very early days for me, looking to broaden knowledge before making a decision. If any of you have a book you’d be willing to lend that would be great. My local library doesn’t have anything unfortunately.

Not really interested in buying the whole deer dog training system from the guy in Tauranga just yet.

Brian Plummers books ( breeder of the Plummer Terrier) are a great start for learning how dogs think and how to use that, to teach and train them

+1 ... I have been thinking along the same lines. Have a viszla pup on the way hoping to train as a pointer for larger 4 legged animals and have been wondering how to go about training also.

Guess you have been google searching, if not there is some clips on youtube from the deer dog blueprint guy. Also if you google the blueprint there is a longish clip to introduce the training blueprint and covers a lot of the early training required. I dont have a dog and dont ask how I know this. I am sure some experts will be along to point you in the right direction

Yeah nah. Book as in a book made of paper that I can hold and read in a dark cabin with no power and defo no internet!

The Plummer books are really good. Once we understand the simple principals of how and what dogs are thinking it is simple. Plummer ran Lurchers for silent hunting and the terriers that he was paid to use ratting in poultry houses.

I have to agree 1000% with Muz on choice of books there...they are old now,and man is labrador mad....but he knows his shit..... a lot of what he taught is considered out dated but the dog is still a dog and man still a man....... it still works.
if you take the basics out of it ,you will work out the rest....
