Call that a dog? Are there any...?

Half in jest, I'm considering getting another dog to protect me in my declining years and I came across two varieties I've not heard of before.

I'm curious to find out, if anyone knows of them, in NZ?

Serious question, not a dig, but why these breeds ?
I mean German Shepherd, Rottie, Dobie, etc
Get one from a good working bloodline and you’re done
Totally understand if it’s a project, I have far too many of those things myself

Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

Female ridgeback will suit our climate better and have twice the endurance of the breeds you mention

I can vouch for that. Had one a few years back now and was one of the most loving yet fierce dog I have ever owned. Scandinavian breeds don't do well in the summer over here. It frustrates the hell out of me when I see so many huskies being paraded around as fashion accessories.

This. A ridgeback can wilt a man with just a look. The wrinkles on its brow give it a "fuck around and find out" expression second to none!

Yep Ridgebacks are great dogs. Grew up with one, she would certainly let you know if someone was coming to visit but a sweet heart after you let them in. Used to have a few beers with my mates and playful punch up / wrestle, mates soon learnt that was a bad idea.

Which Ridgeback are you guys referring,, Rhodesian or Thai ??

Had Rhodesian Ridgeback/Cattle cross many moons ago was the best finder holder I ever had, would never hold without back up didnt matter if it was large boar or runt the size of gumboot, always bailed.

back in eighties bred ridgebacks - my bitch was a great guard dog - but very gentle with kids - absolute no bullshit if she had to be - but then again my two dogs were really very soft - on pigs bloody good - but guard not really - I was using them every day on goat work so they were under really good command - one of the dogs would indicate deer quite well when on his own - but we had dashhunds when we were kids and man they were bloody good guard dogs - no bullshit with them - visitors would not get out of their car until we had put them away - so its a attitude thing not size with being a guard dog - we had several years ago a young lady next door with a bull cross - decided to guard their driveway- but that included ours and half the bloody street- fucken thing got put down after grabbing a child by his clothing on the back of mums push bike - damn good job - be carefull with what you get as it can go horribly wrong with guard dogs

Wasn't even aware that 'self protection' was an option in NZ. Must be something new.

Problem with them is the males can't walk upstairs if they're horny
