It can be hard to find a good trainer in your area that does frequent trainings so it's worth the drive if you find one.

The last time i had a guy called Willie i think and he was awesome. Only needed to use the vibrate and my bitch didn't want a bar of anything that looked/smelt like kiwi.

Booked mine in after he completed the Blueprint training before his first hunt - around 12 months. Have to say he was pretty timid around the frozen kiwis but got failed for looking at one too long - so first couple of years he got 12 month sign off. Then the next year he wasn't having a bar of the kiwis or whio (tested down in Taupo). They had two whio about 1.5m apart that the dog had to walk through (he was not happy). Result - two year sign off. Next test was in North Auckland, he winded the birds from the carpark, looped well away, not happy. Result - two year sign off. They really need a life sign off at this point I reckon. I've used the same technique on frozen possums to good effect - he leaves electric possums alone now.

I got the feeling a younger dog is gonna get a 12 month first couple of years before they'll get the 2 year sign off - so fair enough. It's a pain, but worth it as come across whio fairly regularly in CNI. Now fantails...

My bitch Poppy is,and has always been the most Birdy switched ondog I've ever seen. Right from wee pup her eyes are glued to anything with feathers. She now deer stalking with me has fantails flitting around her feet and doesn't try to go them but keeps wary eye on them. The chooks at home can walk all around her,no worries .black birds get the stink eye when we hunting but chased out of section at home. No means no. Leave it means leave it. And we don't have kiwi anywhere around here to begin with so a moot point.

Yer definitely. My boy only just got his first 2 year pass and was his 4th training.

I'm actually thinking about becoming a trainer, had a chat to my guy and definitly a shortage of trainers.

If you normally run a tracking collar on your dog the training can make them a bit funny about it after, depending on your dog. They shocked the crap out of him during the training and it was probably a good 18 months or so before he came right, I'd bring out his collar to go for a hunt and at the sight of it he would lay down and roll onto his back etc because he didn't want to wear it.

That's not good at all Ryan. It must have been hard as the testing happens so quickly. My guy was fine after the first test, and associates his normal garmin collar with business time. He also associates pulling up to a weird venue, some random dude putting a weird collar that smells of other dogs... as trouble brewing and goes straight to "circle wiiiide around" full chicken mode, particularly once he picks up the bird scent. I do get the sense that post 3 years old, if you keep asking politely as your dog demonstrates good behaviour for a 2 year sign off... you'll probably get it!
