The heading/collie types can be good, watch this one work. Seek a bit of guidance from someone who knows more than I do though if you do go after one; different farm dogs have slightly different jobs or work a different way (heading vs hunting) and some are better suited to deer work than others, I think. I don't know how they go on birds though. It's a shame your wife doesn't want a lab...
