1/2" 28 TPI or 1/2" 20 TPI either is okay, thread root diameter for 1/2" 28 should be slightly bigger leaving more meat between the bore and the thread root. DPT will tell you anyway.

Case separation usually occurs about 10mm ahead of the internal web in the case, where the case walls are starting to thin. The case design (rimmed, rimless, or belted) doesn't make any difference.
