I've got one of these also, great having the extra power when coming back to camp untracked in the dark, especialy finding the right spur climbing out of creek.
Ive got a set of 5watt Midland GTX radios. Work very well in the bush, awesome on the tops. Quite cheap if you bring them in yourself too.

Google maps will show some of the roads you can access that area from - Link Rd etc...? Might pay to check, but I think the Northern area is to be 1080'd starting in June. The Southern side got it...
