a really skinny flexi knife is your friend for this....back when worked in factory my flounder knife was a well worn down fdick with blade down to less than 5mm across...would bouce across rib bones...

try a whitebait type fly..tied about a meter up from your toby...two ways to do it. either tidy swivel and thread fly on above it,curve of hook towards main line so it tucks in....or have about 8" of...
freshie is trout or salmon that has recently arrived in river to spawn,thus its FRESHly arrived usually in top condition as has fattened up for the spawning effort.
slab as I said four posts back,is a post spawning fish that is skinny and SLABsided.....thus called a slab.
back in the 80s a slab was also a 24 pack of cans on a cardboard tray,one of the road...

that knot looks very much like what we use to join mono onto a fly line...never had one let go and yes they bite into plastic cover really well. if worried you could always loop wire back onto itself...

set your drag lightly,so balloon n fish wont move or it overspool when fish on a run,takes but a second to crank it back up when fish is on,thats what we do worming for trout.

back in former life when worked in fish factory...the shark got a soaking in white vinegar n water...the vinegar took away any smell.pretty good at doing same for your hands too.
