    Importing/Exporting high capacity magazines for a A-cat 22lr

I intend to purchase the new Ruger American Rimfire in .22lr, this rifle uses the same 10shot magazine as the ruger 10/22 which means it will also work with the ruger BX25 25shot magazine (which would be legal for a A-cat license holder as the rifle is bolt action)

Reloaders sell the BX25 magazines for $100, serious shooters for $110 and Guncity for $200. However in the US they sell for $25NZD which raises the question how easy is it to bring say 10 of these magazines into the country? I would expect it would cost on $250NZD for the mags plus another $50 or so for shipping, leaving me $700 better off than if i had purchased them in country.

But how hard is it and what import and export bollocks am I going to run into?

Thanks for any halp you can offer.

Probably hit some export issues from the US shop. Also fyi freight forwarding shops generally won't deal with firearms parts.

If it seems too easy in theory to do this, chances are it won't be

You just need to get an import permit which shouldn't be hard.
Most US places wont ship out magazines, as the need a permit and it either costs too much, or is too difficult.

I got the 10/22 mag just the other day, including a filled rear bag. no questions, and the freight was $50, which I thought was a bit steep, but the bag was filled.
so if its a cat I doubt anyone will say anything.

Just buy them from Brownells. Apparently the hi cap mag spiel on the site is out of date.

When I talked to the Arms Officer he said magazines need an Import permit, as they are considered gun parts.

usually the u.s wont send if you need a permit. mine didn't attract gst either, under the max limit. I didn't ask, I just ordered it.
I guess its up to you, if you want to try. mine was from brownells.

Was yours a BX1 (10 shot) or a BX25 (25 shot)? Ive brought in BX1's before without issue but im more hesitant to try a BX25 as it looks eviler and is more expensive is customs steel it.

Going to see the arms officer today so will find out what his interpretation of the law is.

Your AO is wrong. Tell him/her to read the information on their own website or the Arms Act 1983.

To summarise, the only component of a firearm (that is not a pistol, restricted weapon or MSSA) that requires a permit to import is the action of that firearm.

Police do not have a practice of issuing a letter stating that a component does not require a permit to import and suggest that if further information is required by overseas authorities, reference can be made to this information on the New Zealand Police website.

    Arms Act 1983
    2 - Interpretation
    part—
    (a) in relation to a pistol, restricted weapon, or military style semi-automatic firearm, includes any thing, such as a butt, stock, magazine, silencer, or sight, which, while not essential for the discharge by a pistol, restricted weapon, or military style semi-automatic firearm of any shot, bullet, missile, or other projectile, is designed or intended to be an integral part of a pistol, restricted weapon, or military style semi-automatic firearm; and
    (b) in relation to any other firearm, means the action for that firearm

If/when NZ Customs stop your package. Inform them that the 'part' is for an A Category firearm, and as such does not require an import permit under the Arms Act 1983.

They may seek confirmation from your AO, but they cannot legally seize your goods.
