Has your mate shown any interest in hunting overseas eg Africa? If he has rifles in normal kiwi hunting calibres already, why not get him a classic African hunting rifle eg 375 H&H? That way it can be a safe queen and get taken on safari by him and his kids.

If you're still open to suggestion, Serious shooters have a Steyr Classic 223 for $3400, no rings or glass. Elegant looking beast.

Would post a linky, but I'm still crap at that sort of thing.

That's just the price of the scope, new. I don't own one either or a Sako Deluxe it was just a suggestion for a nice scope that would go with that rifle. I obviously didn't make that very clear; my apologies to JoshC.

$7k might get you a basic one.

To me, for a special rifle the Bavarian, while beautiful, is a bit too common.

Is Brian Harre still making rifles? They were things of beauty!

Actually , you could a barrelled action restocked into a very nice piece of walnut. Kevin Gaskill or Alan Carr could sort that out.
Actually ask Alan Carr what he has in his shelves, maybe he has a gun that would suit.

Yeah maybe. Not for this exercise though

Don't have time up our sleeve unfortunately, otherwise that would be a option we'd have looked into more.

I will give Alan a call though. Thanks

    I'd also call Stager Sports
/Hugh Bradley and see what they have on their shelves too.

It may push the budget a touch but a seriously traditional and lovely feeling rifle could be a Blaser K95. Suits a rifle thats taken out every once in a while. A great traditional to get kids their first deer on. Light and just damn awesome. I'll let you guess what I've told my partner id like for a wedding present haha

A Blaser K95 is a fabulous rifle, but unfortunately a 6 month order.
