I looked at the NZ topo on the free app I didn't think resolution was any better than topo50.

From memory i the reason i ditched subscribed nztopomaps a few years back was the the pages wouldnt load off line sometimes or be very slow and blurry to the point i couldnt trust it in the bush.
Hence i went to the other one which works well offline but doesnt have the ability to layer topo over clear satellite images.

Not sure if this was the case then, but you can download/cache imagery and Topo maps at a variety of resolutions. 20 being the highest (full-res LINZ Aerial phot), but obviously this impacts download size. I usually run about 18 which is 20-30MB for an average sized area, and more than enough detail. Haven't had a problem with it loading offline, but do usually check before I go out of service.

NZTopo50 has one resolution, which gets blurry at any useful level of zoom. Same with their topo maps.

Pretty much can't fault NZTopoMaps, but I do also (usually) carry a laminated copy of a "real" map, and compass. Technology has a history of failing just when you need it. Whatever works best for you, really. The basic functionality of NZTopo50 is also def it's strength!

It's the downloading and caching.the tracking part works well. Offline I'll end up with a nice blue squiggly where I've been line on a blue and white checkered background as the map hasn't appeared

Are you sure you have zoomed in on the area first?
I have the pro version and Linz imagery won't work with it. Erin aerial works good for aerial imagery though.

Never had problems navigating/returning to marks with NZTopo50. Gets a bit blurry on screen when showing less than 500m on screen but if you can’t navigate at that resolution you probably shouldn’t be out in the bush anyway. Mind you, I’m of an age where we learnt to navigate by compass and sometimes dodgy paper maps. As for aerial photos, just study Google or Esri satellite/aerial images and transfer coordinates to phone/gps, simple enough.
