The Fire Service is looking to roll them out on all appliances - it will be SMS-lite rather than Firenet on a tablet. Looking to be able to access risk plans and all that stuff through SMS on the road, as well as entering training tasks into SMS for OSM purposes at the point of training. That will be good, if a little time consuming until we get our heads around it but until that rolls out we are looking at setting up our own system.

The reason we ended up with the Samsung tablets is they can take a sim card so no need for the smart phone. We have them set up to receive an e-txt turnout page, address is right there in front of you on the way to the job. Bloody good system, but what we found with the tablets is you need wifi for updates and the like to run the tablet OS. Without that the things fall over or you have to turn off half the functionality which defeats the purpose. Limiting factor is wifi on station at the moment...

We had iauditor, but have gone back to paper for gear checks.

Tablet is now used for our risk plans.

We have another tablet up front for Active911. It works a treat. Although saying that, the big storm we had about a month ago, we never got any through on it....

Hydrant locations on it helps heaps.

Lucky you've got it, no more licenses for Active911 until the new-look VACS system rolls out apparently. One of the guys found a private outfit in Aussie that set up a response indicating system for their service using smart phones, webpage based and once you open it you can indicate whether you are responding or not or are away. Having used it I don't know how we functioned without it to be fair.

I was talking short to mid term. Once FENZ gets sorted. There are quite a few things been trialed.
Also staying on old analogue system as opposed to digital like police

Give this link a go. This is how other members of my brigade signed up. You need to use your fire service email otherwise they won't accept it. One way to guarantee that you are in NZFS. If you can't find your appliance number on the list, PM me and i'll check it on my phone. Eg. Mercer isn't on the list on that page, but they are on Active911, and I can get turnouts for them, if I want. I can only check appliances in region 1 however.

From the turnout, you can go straight to Google/Apple maps for directions, or to another maps page to see all the hydrants. If you don't have hydrants in your area, you are probably just better getting Firecomm to text you the TXT that you would usually get on the page.

Yep, there will be a limited number of callsigns that aren't on the list with the app - apparently we can't get onto it due to no more licences available to add our appliance to the list. Certain areas didn't have good enough coverage and those slots have been reallocated to other units, and there aren't any slots left. A pain, since it's a fairly good setup. We've gone as far as we can as a free-ish unit level system, and now need data to feed the android beast to get any further...

Add, yes I see they now have a state of emergency in Hastings District declared due to the fire danger from high winds and dry conditions. Add to that a 4th alarm shed fire - busy boys and girls down there.

Yup, unfortunately unless the district gets some decent rain the situation isn't going to improve - another dose of high winds or a case of spectacular bad luck and it's all back on for spades...

Taking 12 of my rural fire crew to the CHCH Port Hills fires for the next few days as relief crews.
Keen to get them up there for the experience, but not looking forward to what we might find on such a vast and complicated fire ground.
Certainly know I will need a beer afterwards.
Its been fairly windy in Akaroa today so I expect they won't have got it that much more under control.
