Literally the only projectile I have experienced the infamous "pinhole" from a 270. Shot fallow bucks and flattened it on the spot, gave it ten mins and walked over to it, could see very small entry mark on shoulder and it got up and took off down into a valley like it hadn't been hit at all, very very small amount of blood on the ground where it lay. Not for me

The 270 is a pretty useful cartridge, not a 7 Saum or 280AI by any stretch but still handy and it is my hope that you can have the best experience possible with it. Sorry if I come across as too opinionated

I have only shot Reds with them. Fallow bucks can be tough little pricks though, have had one too dead for a finisher (2506) bring a back leg up and break a knife off as it went in under his chin, all in a millisecond flash.
I did see that Reloading Supplies have 140 gr Partitions at $71 / 50. What about those for the OP ? I haven't used them, only the 130 partition and that was only last week in a de-tuned 270 load, which went well.

Gunworks has 130gr Ballistic Tips in stock. Have performed well for me under a mild'ish load of 2209 and would be fine out to OP's 400m.

I've also had a couple of bad experiences with 130 SSTs.

My favourite bullet of all for the 270 if everything is taken into account and you just want a good projectile that performs well near and far, doesn't break the bank, easy to get shooting well etc would be the 140gr interlock, they perform excellent, cheap and easy to find, don't have a flash pointy plastic tip or anything but the BC isn't actually that bad on them so they go good further out at 270 speeds

Another good 270 thread. Out of interest, what's the experience with the heavier 150 grain ssts as opposed to the 130's as a longer range bullet?

Dunno about 150s, but 140s were okay for me. I’d agree with @Ryan Songhurst though, the 140 BT Interlocks are almost as good ballistically but cheaper still and possibly better terminal performance. I don’t shoot enough deer to get a good sample group, tho!

    My2C, I've been loading for a couple of 270's (Tikka & Rem 700) for the last 25 yrs using 2213sc & 130gn SST's, poked out of a 22" barrel, 58gns = 2900, 59 gns = 2950 & 60gns = 3000 avg fps.
Easy to get good accuracy, 1/2" moa with bedded action.
Sorry can't comment on the powder you have.
IMO nothing wrong with SST's yes they make a fist sized exit hole in fallow, mostly they drop where they stand, big southland reds out to 400yds the same for the most part & if they do run it isn't far & there is a decent blood trail to follow. Results speak for themselves & i haven't seen the need to change the formula or chase the new age calibres.
I say load the SST's if you have them.

Thats what I've heard MD, I've got some 145 eldx ordered but have a bunch of 150 ssts and by all accounts, they work very well out far. I'll load up a bunch and report back.
