    6x45/6mm223 projectiles ?

    I’m in the process of getting a Tikka T3 rebarrelled to 6x45 / 6mm223 .
The new 6mm barrel is a 1 in 8” twist and I’ll be using a Waters magazine to allow for longer cartridge oal .
I want to run projectiles in the 75gn - 90 gn range .
Because of the modest velocities that will be achieved ( compared to the usual 243 / 6mm CM etc velocities) I’m trying to narrow down my projectile choices to find a 6mm bullet that will expand reliably at the slower speeds .
    Any suggestions ?

Do they hold together at those velocities or do they fragment ?

I've used a lot of 70gr blitzkings and speer TNT's in my 6mm-204 Ruger at 3100-3200.

Anecdotal, but surprisingly the bliztkings have held together enough to punch though pigs at 150-200m. I've not had a chance to line up on one with a 6mm TNT yet but I did get one with a 50gr TNT from my 223 (3300fps) - it went through the shield and completely shredded the heart and lungs at 150m. Nothing really touched the ribs on the far side let alone made it through. I'd expect 6mm ones to behave similarly.

If I wanted something guaranteed to hold together and penetrate, I'd opt for a nosler ballistic tip or the lightest barnes ttsx I could get.

    I have 3 x .223 rifles ( 2 x Howa’s and 1 x Tikka ) the Howa’s actually shoot better ( 77 TMK’s ) than the old Tikka and I was contemplating selling it .
Buttt…… after some reading it dawned on me that turning the Tikka into a 6x45 would be fun for a number of reasons.
1 - it will be my first attempt at altering brass / wildcatting .
2 - the 6x45 is actually more efficient and produces higher velocities than the equivalent 22 cal bullet weights .
3 - the Waters magazine that I purchased to allow longer oal in the .223 is really applicable to the 6x45 and will allow me to maximise powder/ potential of the cartridge, something that can be an issue when loading to the original .223 lenght .
    4 - Just because

#4 is enough lol. Speer TNT in .308 don't exit small wallabies.... I would bet Rushey's left ball they will expand for you at your velocity in 6mm.

85gr HPBT Sierra, 80-85gr SP Speer & 87gr SP Hornady all do what you are asking. CFE223 will be your friend for those weights.

I don’t actually know how to answer that question sorry

They just kill things, I have never gone looking for the projectile

I’ve tried the following in mine:
    55gr SBK. 68gr Shillen, 68gr Berger, 70gr SBK, 70gr Nosler BT, 82gr Tusker(my own brand), 85gr SGK, 95gr Goodnell(Mono).

I settled on the 70s. Good speed, crazy accurate and kills out to 300m with ease.

A good mate of mine kills a LOT of animals with the 75gr Vmax in his 6x45, including red deer stags. They’re doing 3000 fps so you’ll be fine with the 87gr Vmax for sure.
In fact, with what I’ve learned from the .223 and 6x45 I think the 87 Vmax is possibly the best bullet you could load for it.
