Out in the tall timber today, got two goats off-hand at 76m through the trees and about 30degrees down slope from ridge..the Billy stood still a moment too long and I got my cross on neck, front of shoulder - no coming back from that,! 150g Remington Corlokt from 7x57mm Interarms Mk X..a half grown kid kept stepping so took the kidney shot as its front half disappeared behind a tree. Another emphatic kill. When we got down there, mate took the kid's hind legs for dinner, the bullet had entered obliquely just in front of hind leg and basically gutted the poor little fella. I added his tail to the bag. Nice head on the Billy but small as was the animal itself. Left it on the stump. Nice to get out for half a day.

Even at the age of 11, they can learn patience. (Theoretically.)
Sorry dogs, these bunnies are for your dinner tomorrow. Thanks for licking up the drips in the meantime.

Got to go for a walk on the farm today. Wasn't too windy so I took one of the hornets. Walking along the track firstly I saw a couple of mynas haven't shot one of those in ages so ranged it and just under 100m so decided that would test the zero and 1 dead myna didn't take a pic as there wasn't much to take one of. A little while later about an hour I spotted a small mob of goats counted 11. I sat and just watched them for a while but they were out of reach for the hornet at 525m plus a lot of wind up on the ridge and no decent backstop so flagged those ones. carried on doing the loop and spotted another mob of 16, also not in a good spot to take a shot as they were on the top of another ridge and no backstop but they were within range at 170m. I just lay there watching them to see which way they would go and also had something to eat. Eventually they came down the side of the ridge towards me a bit, so I picked one out and took a shot at the shot he dissapeared and the others took off. I walked over to where he had been and he had run about 8m around the corner and dropped dead on a slip. headed back home for a date with the lawnmower...
A deflated squirrel, that was busy scolding me while out hunting, i had to change the 7x64 barrel to .22 hornet barrel, fit the scope and get ammo from bag, Was still scolding me and the dog, so deflated with a 46gr soft point. pretty graphic.

Wow you look like you killed a whole family of Wabbits !
A couple of hours this afternoon with the 17HMR. It can be pretty brutal.

This one was odd. I shot a rabbit at about 30m. There was a puff of fur, and it vanished out of sight behind the little hump it had been partialy obscured by. When I went over I found this????
Attachment 236385
WTF??? Looked around and couldn't see any other part of it. Eventually found it about 5m away in some broom bushes down hill from where I had shot it and it had dropped it's guts.
Some good trap bait right there mate [emoji106]

Delightful shoot saturday afternoon/evening in north Canterbury. Team visited a site we've been shooting for 16 years - very picturesque 5500 acres up against high country here. Used to shoot bunnies on this site by the 10s of thousands but last few years much much quieter, and the continuous rain of recent La Nina weather patterns meant too much grass growth to even shoot last year.
This afternoon however was very different. Boys all so pleased to go back to this special part of Canterbury, and we drove over a good part of it during afternoon, enjoying the very beautiful scenery. Only shot 3-4 in the arvo, but great to be there again in perfect weather conditions, and no long grass!
Got into the serious business of the shooting just on dark, and while not many bunnies these days, there was still enough to have fun. Took my 95 year old Savage SxS 12 guage to give it a run, and it was quite busy during the night. Lethal old girl and kicks like a mule - but deadly on bunnies/possums. Other boys on 223s. We had a good time wandering the landscape spotlighting, and signed out with 55 varmints - mostly hares - but including 6 possums.
Mmmm.... thoroughly enjoyable start to the new season. Smiles all round - the boys love this place. Why we shoot.. :)
Like @mudgripz, spent the evening out on a dairy farm spotlighting. Took my daughter out after she has been asking for awhile. Expecting thunder storms but weather was great. Managed to shoot 7 hares and 1 possum with the .204. My shooting was crap though so a couple got away...or did I let them go because my daughter was there-- I have no excuses as wobbling everywhere. Daughter wanted to have a look at a shot hare and saw them with all sorts of massive injuries including no head but didn't bother her. Really cool evening out.Attachment 236851Attachment 236852. Didn't take any animal photo's. Torch from Piercing the Darkness is awesome.
