Bumped into a hunter (stalked is probably the better word) in the Kaimais last weekend and he had a 3030 with a cut down barrel. Looked the bees knees.

Alot from tree stands , but by no means all and I would guess treestand ranges would be much the same as bush hunting. You just don't get the chance too shoot when the deers standing the right way round in the bush like you do from a treestand .

    Yes, but with mixed results.

I rarely used .357mag ammo in it, mainly using it with .38spl ammo. To get a bang-flop kill I found that it had to be an Atlas-joint shot. I only shot a handful of deer that I can remember with the .38spl. I do remember trying neck shots for a while, but with no shocking power I lost a few when I didn't hit bone, so gave up on it for that kind of hunting.

I reckon a marlin 30 30 would be ideal to take on the mountain bike. I quite often see the odd pig or stinky. the marlin is small handy and I think within a hundred meters it could deal to most stuff. putting a scope on it would be a waste of time and if that was the case you should do wot kj suggested and just carry bolt action with a can.

with this leverevolution ammo from hornady and a 20" barrel it is supposed to give the 30-30 a bit more range but would never under estimate it as a bush rifle

Had one for awhile. The Winchester Trapper. Wasn't that comfortable to shoot, especially having to squeeze the lever closed whist pulling the trigger. I guess just a case of multi tasking. Rattly and floppy bloody things as well

Far more deer have been shot in our bush with a 26" or so barrel 303 than a short barrel 30-30. So why aren't you clamoring to try one of them?

    Both are a pile junk.

And Carlson's problem is that someone put him in a time machine that was facing the wrong direction.

I hunt in the uk with a marlin 336 in 3030 when in thick woods, where shots are under 100 mtrs, a Leopold m8 4x32 fits a dream, have had a e o tec on it, the point of balance is great for free hand shooting and a dream to carry in the hand compared to bolt actions, the new hornady ammo increases you range and hitting power, but I prefer Winchester silver tips.

I'll add it to the (extensive) list.

Realtalk Lever actions are awesome and my favourite rabbit gun is my Winchester 9422 .22WMR with Skinner iron sights.

I owned a Marlin 336 (? the one with str stock) 3030 and took plenty of pig and deer. Only sold it 'cos I was a little tired of beating up ammo through the tube mag when unloading. Yes all bush hunting, nice to carry and all under 150m.

If you go 3030 - get a decent hand load sorted, or winchester 150gn silver tips

    that was my expereince anyway
NOBODY IS PERFECT - but if you're from Yorkshire you're pretty close
The above was written slowly, for those of us who can't read quickly.
