Anyone shooting goats in N HB region?

Yesterday I was up the coast a bit at Wairoa and Mahia. We must have seen at least 400 goats on the Northern half of the Mahia Peninnsula, and they seemed very quiet, not even moving off the side of the road as we drove by. I know a guy who has shot 7000 goats on family forest block at Wairoa. Numbers appear out of control.

So I'm wondering how many people here are shooting the area? What knd of tallies are you getting?

most people up here muster them but yep there is a lot of goats around wairoa. Not helped by forestry
    Also ammo shortage and price

Problem is if you shoot them on your place they go to the neighbours for a bit, especially if they don't get shot over the fence.

Its nuts at times seeing how many goats are in Hawkes Bay, especially north of Napier.

Access to shoot them on some of that private land is also a problem.

way, way back (like last century) used to surf at a few spots around Mahia, don't recall seeing goats but vividly remember shots being fired in our direction ?! .... some folks apparently did not like sharing.

I'm a Wellington boy with no country contacts keen to get my son learning hunting skills on HB goats. What I don't have is any leads on getting access to properties. I've tried the HB regional council, DOC and Federated Farmers and I have not one lead back. If anyone has any info on who may want goats destroyed please PM me. Thanks team!

There are pockets of goats but you may have noticed that the goat numbers around Waipatiki all the way back through to the Napier Taupo road are the lowest they have been for decades.
Also a few of the forestry companies have virtually eradicated goats out of areas where there used to be thousands. All of that farmland that has been purchased to go into pines and all of the second cycle forestry blocks have been absolutely smashed.
The good prices for goats has driven up the amount of mustering that has been carried out in the last few years also.

There isn't much in the way of DoC land around Hawkes Bay with goats. There used to be a few reserves you that were DoC that you could get permits for but most of them have been given back to the local Iwi's. The council also heavily cull goats in all of their blocks too.

FMNZ use to issue permits for there forestry blocks (for a small admin fee) give the Napier office a call they may still be issuing if the fire danger isnt to high https://fmnz.co.nz

Had a pre-roar goat session on the Mahia Peninsula about ?20 yrs ago. The young farmer was a proper one and his place was a credit to him. Hundreds of goats would jump out of the neighbouring "native" and hook into his grass daily. We knocked over about 120 before giving up counting. Ammo supply and extreme barrel heat were the only limitations. My poor .270's barrel was never the same after..
