DOC were thinking of putting a gate up at the bottom to try and curb the yahoo's spot lighting and damaging the the hut at the road end,(Might pay to ring em) plenty of places to camp along the road id just suggest placing your wagon between you and the road.Ive camped up there and been woken early hours by my tent being spot lighted, Ill pm you with some places that usually hold a few deer in spring

Road was open with no gates all the way to the hut a couple months ago.
Hut wasn't to bad but obviously often target of vandalism. I wouldn't stay in it though.

It always has been being so accessible i called in there late one night with the plan to stay but it was full of young guys pissed to the gills, so opted to sleep under the further up the road,

if your coming from the Napier side try the Lawrence road end or lakes /Macintosh road. River flats usually yield results in spring.pm me if you like
