Well done, I do a bit of both public and private, long and short range....and have to say sometimes it can actually be harder on the farm so skills come in to play, skills you use in public, private, bush or open are much the same...


A lady from my Friday local once asked me what I liked about hunting.....my answer....I like to see them blink as I pull the trigger....

I got no problem with farm hunting, actually am all for it when it’s controlling numbers and/or for meat.

Just saying i don’t view a 12 point farm stag the same as a 12 point public land stag.

And at the rate that a lot of farmland has been planted up, there's gonna be a need for a lot more 'Tahrs' to keep on top of expanding populations.
Every year forward gravity reminds us that its always gonna be here, and you just have to get smarter about how you deal with it.

to you silly buggers knocking shooting a good stag on a farm well what if they bugger just walked out of a large piece of DOC land -are you going to pass it up simply because its standing on a patch of grass -get real

Looks the same hanging on the wall, just the story that goes with it is what matters whether lies or BS doesn't really matter.

Shot 2 twelves this yr on the riverbed.I dont count night deer as trohys so I just sold the hard antlers.Stag meat went to the butchers,turned into small goods.Nice.

That's another privilege that comes with age. Farmers are more likely to give access to "mature" gentlemen. And it takes a long time to build networks and trust.

Agree fully, took me 15 years of hunting to get the access I now have......

Well while i have neither the runs on the board nor the experience of Brian or Tahr, they are most likely fitter Tha me due to getting out there and proper technique.
As for easy ones, I bloody wish. The closest I had was with @Moa Hunter back about sept/October and that was still a challenging walk out between us even if it wasn't a heap of miles. It did come out whole mind you.
I am getting older and whilst I have a relatively high pain tolerance, things get sore quicker and stay sore longer.
Bring on the easy ones to at least say I'm getting something lol.
To use a crude analogy, when we were younger and starting to get interested in the fairer sex, for most of us if we set our lofty sights on the trophy types, we may not have won much at all (albeit being quite happy about it), vs lowering the sights a little and bringing the conversion rate up a bit

Like the eye surgeon in Auckland,his sights set to high.He might get free board n keep soon.

I have done my share of both "types" of hunting. Like most, I cut my teeth doing the hard yards on heavily hunted public land but now have the privilege of shooting some private land for pleasure and pest control. It has changed my hunting a bit. Meat is easily obtainable locally so now my focus on "public" hunting has become more about exploring great country and seeing animals, not necessarily shooting them. These days the lesser distance I have to carry the meat the better.

Haven't you heard of "any port in a storm" well that's how I operated in the early days.

@Shearer there is something to be said about having the pressure taken off by filling the freezer with easy ones when you do want to be selective on a trophy which also sort of fits with my analogy lol. @tetawa I agree with you but didn't because I was stupid along with a couple of other reasons
