Yes, can be crafty filers alright. Shot on Chatham’s years ago before it became ‘a thing’, done some hunting in Clarence and also on Arapawa island when the idea was eradication. Arapawa was a shit storm with Betty Rowe and her cohorts wanting to save them. Wild bush bulls are more of an adrenaline rush by the way.

I had a chance to hunt the Clarence ones in the 90s before DOC bought the block (if it is the one I am thinking of...) We were allowed in about 12 months later to retrieve gear left at the private hut after the sale and it was silent. There had been a 1080 blitz. The first trip in, you could not sleep at night due to the noise from the insects and birds....There was birdife everywhere.....a few goats and deer but not a lot. The return trip it was silence- no bords, no insects nothing.

Nice trophy ram well done. Saw a nice one up Salmon Creek in the mid 80s no deer though. Worked in the Chathams in the 90s and shot a couple in Pitt and main Island had the heads in the shed down south and the wife gave them away to a friend's sister. She wanted them " cause they looked cool " spray painted them gold and silver...

back in seventies goat culling at Mohaka near the Tehoe River we were asked by the cocky to hit the wild merinos hiding out in big Kanuka block along the Mohaka river -he was worried about rams getting into his romney flock - well we took to that with enthusiasm and some of the best mutton out - considering they had never seen drench they were always in good nick apart from some having bad hooves - definitely merino of some sort - heres a tip to dealing with daggy shreks - open them up on the ground and then hang them up by the kneck and punch skin off backwoods as to how one would normally do a sheep - that way the daggy arse is last and one is punching between clean skin and carcass - keeps carcass cleaner - even better use a quad to pull skin of -one is rewarded with some really good mutton

I stalked into half a dozen feral sheep way up on the tops along way from anywhere many years ago, (20+) and I can only think it was a flash of my watch that gave me away. I was up hill of them and upwind. There was no hesitation on there part it was we are out of here.. I thought they will stop on the bush edge and I may get a long shot at them... nope they just kept running all the way into the bush, yip they can be crafty. I did manage to get a decent trophy ram a day or so later.

    Wild bulls, bugger that LOL.

Fuck, auto spell or whatever on iPhone pisses me of at times! Anyhow, spent a fair bit of yesterday trying to muster a few ewes that had missed a couple of shears off a scrubby hill block up Leatham yesterday. Long story short, when they know where all the tunnels are through matagouri, pigfern, bush lawyer etc they’ll go where they want the crafty shits. We will muster them with rifle next time.
