Man @Scouser those storms coming through the CNI have knocked quite a few trees and branches all across the tracks.

and a couple of boys behind the wire...... Sorry for the bed resolution from old i-phone but they looked awesome through the steiners...

Now interesting in that this paddock had what looked like a deer trap where the public land that backs onto this paddock comes in higher up on the hillside and there's a entry spot for the fence that they could jump down to see their mates but not get back out again as its a 2m with a back lip to get back to the bush.

There were tracks (public land side of the fence where) a couple of stags and hinds it looked like had walked along the remainder of the fence line around this spot. Is this still a common method used to trap the deer from Public land these days?? Looks like it had been there quite a awhile and seen some use over the years. There was a section of about 15m of deer fence further along the fenceline that looked like it could be rolled back (to let any out they didn't want to keep I guess) I'll take some pics next time I'm there, looked quite a good set up..
Yeap, I know of a farmer with a deer fenced area, deer come down off the hills down a spur and theres a bit of a jump down, once theyre down there they find themselves enclosed in a paddock that they cant get back out of

Yup thats pretty much it, and when we popped in here last time (a few months back) they had the boys roaring in a smaller paddock at the bottom of this one - very clever I thought and appreciated that went into the thought process behind it. There distinctly looked like a few different groups in the paddock and lack of any eartags.

So are these (given lack of eartag's) likely to be most likely to be prior to any testing and building up herd? or for stocking game parks for overseas visitors to shoot? @ Rushy will prob know and @Packhorse knows the farm its on... given the large Radio repeater mast at the top of the hill and seeing a few of his photo's in the past.

Bloke I know just uses it to catch a few for the pot, they did have big problems with deer in the past and it was used quite a lot but now they even close it sometimes to leave them out on the hill, sows a patch of crop in a direct line of sight from the spur and the buggers cant help themselves

Had a great winter tramp with my family and my brother and his daughter.
No venison or antlers from our trip the kid's adventures, smiles, laughter and damn silly faces were our rewards...

On the trail, a five hour walk didn't produce any whines or moans from the kids and only a couple from the adults.

    Toasted marshmallows for pud !

The motley crew ready for the walk out.

Carpe Diem they are good for capture but if they don't have access to move into larger fenced areas to relax for a couple of months they go up, over or through fences. In my teens we used to hang around an uncles farm down national park, broke a few deers necks by pressuring them that way in the trap. Oh and use a heading dog, huntaways just push them through fences makes a right mess

Enough deer talk. I'm off Pokémon hunting
