Yes this is my mates gun and I have finally brought him to the dark side we are having his new Xbolt 7mm rem mag dressed up at the moment it is going to be beautiful.
And no HUNT ALONE TIP 7mm is suppressed very happy this will save my ears for sure when we hunt.
The 270 is soft as with the hunt alone tip but it is waaaaaayy to loud to be useful if I bush pig it it will be suppressed don't worry about that.
But will see if someone wants to swap it for something already pigged it is a nice light tops gun at the moment (If you like hunting alone that is and only shooting once Hahaha)

Took my precious to the range yesterday arvo ahead of a bit of fallow pest control this evening. Chucked the gong in front of the bank, drove out to about 100 odd, lent on the back of the ute, pop, dead centre of bull dot on gong. Handed it to my mate, pop, same result. Job tidy

Bit of overkill for the fallow but dead is dead

    Rem Mod 7 308
16" standard barrel with DPT overbarrel
    165 BTs doing 2650
Leupy VX2 with clicky bits see's me out to 500 with the zero stop in
Stug stock all up 2.4kg or something
Felt bloody good to pull the trigger! Been ages

Only deer I ever got with the 416 remmy. Shot at a couple others but ran out of talent. Only stag I've ever got too.
20 years ago close to Waitangi day-evening shot

Nothing wrong with a bush pig 270.
Didn't NZ hunter mention that 270 is least effected by velocity drop with shorter barrels and factory ammo

I must admit the couple of possums I've removed from the food chain with the 45/70 MIGHT have been overkill...

Unless you're using slugs , that might be borderline overkill...

Honestly if you have an accurate rifle that you like to carry anywhere and are familiar with whether it be a 270 or a 308 or any sensible deer cartridge you wont go wrong...I used to beat myself up about numbers and to tell you the truth if you shoot a deer properly you'll never know the difference...

so what is it like if you remove loudener from end???? eg bare barrel..... pretty sure you will be able to find suppressor with correct thread to try it out...doesnt matter if hole in end is bigger

loudest rifle Ive ever heard..and two of them...were both browning boss types with fine tuning loudeners on end...one in 25/06 and the other was a dirty 06.....we even tried taping cut up cola can over the holes and insulation taping it in place to hush it a bit..but it blew that right off....

Imo there's no better all round caliber than the .308 for all NZ hunting, velocity isn't too high for close range bush hunting and still having plenty of legs out to 500y and beyond, the 168gr eldm going 2670 out of my 18" sako has stepped the old girl up, has over 1000 ft-lbs of energy out to 700y, pretty impressive for the old .308. When it comes to hunting stags in the bush during the roar the .308 definitely has the advantage over anything with the heavier 180gr bullets going at a modest speed.
some of us use speer 170grn round nose projectiles in the mighty poohseventy for bush stalking...... Nick Harvey does a wee speel about them in older manuals... they BEAT the 180s out of dirty 06 by enough to matter .....surprised the heck out of me when ran figures through ballistics calculater just how well these fence post like projectiles hold up out to 350 yards...
and I am HUGE fan of 180grn loads in 308 for bush hunting...the winchester factory are primo.

Well by the sounds of it it will be quite suitable so If someone doesn't want to do a direct swap to save the work of cutting it up I will cut it up into what he is after it will be Quite interesting messing with a Mossberg getting it shooting and feeling all nice and custom.

I like my .270 but have not shortened it for the reasons you mentioned. My go to Sika rifle for hunting in the thick stuff is a Blaser R93 7mm08 with the barrel shortened to 17" and a Hardy compact suppressor. Factory Hornady Superperformance 139gn SST's exit the barrel at 2700 fps and can put three in less than 1/2 MOA on a good day. Scope is a Swarovski Z6 1.7-10x with TDS reticle is sighted in at 100 with hold over marks fortuitously on for 200 and 300. Good luck with the project
