ammo up to a limit of X??? 3kg??? is all good if packed in a separate pack (each round single packed so rounds can't knock together so bulk buckets are a no go). bolts separated from the rifle in same bag as ammo or a tigger lock fitted for lever or other style.
so you need 2 checked bags and need to tell the airline some time in advance of turning up.
I have only traveled air NZ domestically with rifles. and not in the last 3 years.

looks like i'm wrong with some of my info above, ie air NZ lets you take up to 5kg of ammo and container.
