    Gunsmith recommendation

    Hi,
Just joined today as a new member.
Can anybody recommend an upper North Island or generally North Island based gunsmith competent with corrective work on the Winchester M70 CRF action ?
I'm experiencing a minor extractor issue causing a bit of brass damage and want to find out if it can be cured. Not major, but annoying.
    Thanks for any help. Cheers

Arthur Cleland in Hamilton has been great. He did most of my work. Good quality and below average pricing.
Not sure if he is retired though.

Not the best pic sorry but shows what I'm talking about. Brass in the extractor groove is being cut by the sharp edge of the extractor. Also I'm finding the belt is getting roughed up as well. The scarring on the case body occurs on chambering but is now at least partly corrected. At first brass shavings were deposited into the chamber cut for the case belt but now that's fixed only some light body marking still occurs. I don't like it but can live with it as it probably has minimal affect on brass life. I have a push feed action same calibre and none of this happens and would like the CRF M70 operating to the same level.

Many thanks Muzza. He's in an ideal location. Looking at his website info suggests he should be qualified and at least well worth talking to. I'll send an enquiry his way. Cheers.

Thankyou. Have dealt with David Dwen. I think this particular issue might be better with more of a specialist. No slight on David though. Helpful and good guy to deal with.
    Cheers.

Thanks all round guys. Very helpful info and suggestions. I've emailed Cobus but no reply yet. Maybe still on leave as noted. I'll give it a while before following up. No great urgency yet.
    Cheers.

Those are some weird graunches on the case body! How sharp are the feed lips on the mag? The extractor must have a pretty sharp edge to damage the extractor groove on the case?

To my feel the feed lips don't seem sharp or strongly edged. I think the edges have probably been softened. I don't think they are causing the brass scarring.
One thing I'm not sure of is where the mag box meets the feed ramp and whether the chambering case scrapes over this junction...??? Need to look at this more closely. Possibly the top edge of the mag box is a tad high...??
