Thread: Remington 600 Restoration - Who else has one?

Just thought i'd show off a wee project i've just finished in case anyone's interested. My dad's Remington 600 .243 was his deer rifle since he was in his early twenties. He always told me it was extremely accurate and he'd bought it off a mate after watching him drop 3-4 Thar in a row with it at 350-400 yards. He basically nagged his mate to sell it to him for months until he finally sold it to him. I shot my first deer with it when I was a youngster and it's been pretty special to me ever since. The stock was very worse for wear, had been snapped through the palm swell and shoddily repaired as well as having a bad bedding job. The original plastic trigger guard had warped as they do and the barrel had been shot out and accuracy was poor. Dad is terminally ill with Motor Neurone Disease so I wanted to restore his rifle back to its former glory for him to see while he's still with us.

I bought a new reproduction walnut stock which is an exact copy of the factory stock and the colour of the wood matches the original nicely. I also bought an aluminium replacement trigger guard. The barrelled action was sent to Hugh Bradley in Alexandra who custom makes his own barrels. He came recommended from another forum member and can make a barrel to any custom contour in either stainless or chrome-moly. I gave him a custom contour I wanted which was larger in diameter than the original pencil thin barrel and 1 inch longer (19.5"). Twist rate is 1-8 to handle the heavier bullets and it's got 5R rifling. The original vented rib along the top of the barrel had been removed before dad bought the rifle and he preferred it that way so I kept the new barrel clean of any rib or sights. Hugh gave the barrel a high lustre polished blued finish and re-blued the action too.

Dad always had an old Kahles Helia 4S2 scope on it which he raved about in terms of it's clarity in low light conditions. His one had all the bluing worn off, it was rusty and the glass was chipped so I managed to source another one which was in excellent condition. Being a 26mm tube I had to use Burris Signature rings with .10" negative offset inserts and I used a weaver rail mount which I trimmed the forward overhang from.

I realise that it's now essentially only the same action and trigger as before but that's the heart of the rifle right? You can see the final result below which i'm extremely proud of. Dad was absolutely stoked with it and best of all it's shooting .75 inch groups at 100 yards with factory ammo and thats with the old Kahles 4x scope, stock not yet bedded and me not trying too hard. I'm hopeful it could get down to .5 inch or smaller. I'll now be able to use it for the rest of my life.

I've seen very few Remington 600's advertised for sale or talked about so who else has one? Post up your pics i'm interested to see them.
