Go for it Toby. Mauser and 7x57 go together, although the M12 is not a real mauser. But then you would have to sell both kidneys as well as all your rifles to be able to buy a new Mauser M98.

Stainless steel and plastic/carbon fibre is very functional but lacks atmosphere (couldn't think of a better word) of blued steel and walnut. I took my Mauser 9.3x62 on my week long sika hunt rather than my suppressed 708 for that reason.

I think you should get the sako if you are unsure at all. I do things to my wee blaser that would have jaws on the floor and eyes popping at blaser but it will never ever be sold on so resale is not important. Used it to bash steps across a rock face on the weekend when we got caught in the dark in a nasty spot....

I honestly don't know (understand) why people get concerned about rifles getting beat up whilst hunting - its a friken hunting rifle. Hold on, lets buy a ferrari but we wont drive it because its too nice too and we wouldn't want it to get a stone chip would we . Who wants to own a nice rifle and only shoot paper? Im pretty sure there are rifles designed for that purpose only.

I look at it more as would you take a ferrari 4x4ing?

Buy the one you want, sakos are awesome, the Mauser would be my choice but then again a new CZ550 would be awesome too and you get controlled feed.

If you want the Mauser to come with the wood in the pic you posted Toby it's gonna get real expensive, real quick.

I'm not trying to put you off, because it does looks beautiful, but don't think that the base price will give you a rifle like in the pic.

I would have a hoon on an 85 before going down that route (if you haven't already) cos I have long arms also and they feel horrible to me.

I would take a ferrari 4x4ing if it was DESIGNED for that purpose or CAPABLE. Sure if you can afford to have multiple rifles and have one gor bush hunting, one for tops hunting, one for farm hunting, one for safari hunting, one for heli hunting and finally one for paper hunting then thats all good and would be wicked. I guess I went the wrong way in my first post of simple saying don't let a rifle dictate where you hunt hmmm nor sure im making any sense now. Lol

Even though I might say otherwise, buy exactly what you want Toby. Better to buy once / cry once

I read somewhere a while ago the there were 2 types of rifle.
The 'using' rifle and the 'looking' rifle.
The latter was the one you didn't use much but just loved having it in your gun cabinet because it was such a work of art.
I nearly bought one of those a while ago. A fully wooded left hand Manlicher 30 06. Beautiful wood, in mint condition and no doubt it would have been a great investment. I knew it wouldn't spend much time out hunting because I already had a bush 308 and a tops 300wm.... but I still wanted it.
I think @Toby, you are the sort of person that will own numerous firearms over the years so my advice would be if you have the coin buy what you want now. If you wait until you are certain you will never buy anything. Like girlfriends you can always move her on if it ends up not being right for you or you may end up keeping her forever. Only one way to find out.
