Thread: What Stock?

I held off getting a 300wsm and now have conceived another idea! That is to resurrect my Remington Model 700 in .270 and have that as a lightweight hunting rifle. I'm looking to change the stock on it to shave some weight and possibly get it fluted.
My question is what stock?

I've considered McMillan, HS Precision and or Manners... I emailed the McMillan bloke and he quoted me $750 to my door which was a bit more than I anticipated and here in Aus thats almost a brand new tikka T3 haha

What's everyones thoughts? I just want something durable, lightweight and comfortable for hunting. I am leaning towards the HS precision at the moment because its so much cheaper but thought I'd gather some thoughts first.

Don't think the hs precisions are very light.

Very light, compared to the rest.

Check the weights carefully. The HS Precision won't be far off the weight of a factory Remington stock. Hi Tech Specialities is another option, it will need some finishing and probably painting though. Will have to put a recoil pad on it, which will add to the weight High Tech Specialties Stocks

havent owned a mcmillian but the manners t4a is awesome. be around the same price as the mac tho

I have a HS Precision long action RH for sale (well a mate does anyway). Rem 700 will drop in. No bottom metal but I'm pretty sure your existing will work anyway if it is a BDL. They are not the lightest though. Pretty sure its off a PHL and they are 5.5 - 5.75lbs all up (well that's what their site quotes it as).

I am thinking that this is the case! the only real reason for considering this is the .270 was my old mans that he had for years and it was sort of a passing on of the torch giving it to me so I want to actually use it for something as opposed to just collecting dust as its done lately.

use it then, remingtons arnt exactly heavy guns. go too light and the bastard will bite you each time you pull the trigger. lighter = more recoil

spend your $ on glass and practice.

Yeh I know what you mean, I'd still love something nice and light though. Maybe its because my brother has a kimber montana! I've thought about getting a new scope (Swaro Z5) but for now I reckon I'll stick to the VXIII. I'm not too scared of the recoil, I've got my 300 WM and that doesn't bother me at all (it's in Sako bavarian and far too heavy for mountain hunting I've learnt!). I love practice and we have a long tailed rabbit over here that's great for it!

I just wish I could take my own advice

Get a boyds, cheap enough that you can have a go lightening it as much as possible, drill some holes in the butt under the recoil pad, remove material in barrel channel etc, if you bugger it up its not the end of the world!

My Hi-Tech is light as. Needs a lot of finishing work though. Can get finished stocks from them I think. What about Wild Dog Stocks? They're Aussie and made of Carbon. Otherwise APRS in Adelaide are the agents for Manners. Manners MCS-SL looks nice.
