yeah mate until I bought the surf 8 years ago I never had either, traded a perfectly good 5yro by then manual XR ute for it.
Having said that it was a good trade for me, that xr6 ute had trouble getting out of a wet flat paddock.

I was going to say I recon they should give you ten grand and the shagger for the surf but thought I already bag them too much on here.

Its just that they really really dropped the ball with the shagger line........ BADLY! And for a Toyota man that cuts deep,it hurts so bad I am not sure if I will ever forgive them.
They got some way back into my good books by making a double cab cruiser after at least 15 years of people making their own

Still , would like to know about pitfalls on the 2008 Toyota if possible, also would prefer to buy local if possible, or say one hr odd either side of Oamaru.
Don't want to be broken down 1/2 way up the waitaki valley in three weeks time trying to ring an Auckland dealer.

If it makes you feel better

We traded our Jap Import 1996 Mitsi Pajero 2.8 Turbo Diesel SWB, LSD, Auto 4x4 .All bells and whistles, done 121,000 None of it off road. We were owner No 2 for, wait for it.............wait...............$2500.

In hindsight should have kept it for a hack as it was a good vehicle (I think they are underrated) but 2 vehicles to register was a bit much when one was really just a play truck
All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

Make sure the injector seals have been done. If they leak you'll end up with holed/cracked pistons or a seized motor. That's the short of it. Anywhere from $6000-15000 to fix a 1KD motor. If it blows any kind of smoke, don't touch it. And possibly check the clutch has been done. Other than that they're not bad. Mine cost me ALOT of money...it was a dog of a truck. I know a lot of guys who are having great runs out of 05> Hilux's. I also know a lot of guys who have had serious issues with their Hilux's. I eventually went to back to an older landcruiser and never looked back.

If you can get over the ugliness, a new base model Triton could be bought brand new for well under $40k. I priced up a top spec GLS with all the extras (lifted, snorkel, bars, etc etc), $43k incl gst. Everyone I spoke to who I know has one, said they take a thrashing and none have had issue with them. These trucks are farmers or contractors trucks and they get flogged. Why would you buy a 2nd hand hilux with 100,000+ kms and an unknown past for similar coin? They aren't that much better.

You'll get heaps of mixed reports about different trucks from a lot of people, often from people that haven't even owned that model or make of truck, but are happy to bag them out. Talk to people who have owned them. Look at a few, take them for drives, then make a choice.

One of my staffs Hubby's work for Ford. They apparently sell heaps of rangers. To be honest I would look at one of them if I ever had enough money just laying around.

    But I'm too tight.

Won't let me edit but to clarify... They sell heaps of ranges to guys coming off 3-5 year leases... Specificly people that have owned recent hilux's.

Yeah there's a few PX rangers about down here on the market in the $35-40k bracket.

The injectors will need replacing at some stage I got 150,000km on my hilux before they needed replacing. 2005-2009 hilux's all have injector problems at some stage.
