Thread: Auto Sparkies/ handymen

Looking to get a car for my boy/wife. Is it much of a job to swap out the Japanese stereo for a NZ one and still keep all the features,ie the reversing camera etc. None of the imported ones I’ve looked at have Bluetooth, but have other features running through the display.
Is it simple swap the plugs and go, or more complex than that.

Or is anyone looking at selling a Corolla or Mazda 2/3 in the near future????

I put a Sony one in my wifes Mazda no problems, reversing cam etc just plugged in, on wired to new plug.

Talk to Ryan at rural auto electric in Temuka...he very clever young lad who does a great job without charging arm,leg and left testicle.

You may even be able to buy an adapter plug from Supercheap.
I’ve wired a few in my time but before reverse cameras.

wavetech in christchurch is cheaper than supercheap and have most of common adaptors.

On a serious note in reply to your OP...It depends...On a lot of newer cars (including the 2004 march belonging to my wife) swapping them out is a huge affair as the stereo component is also dashboard component as well as containing a whole heap of the cars other stuff....(Long way of saying its all one integrated component in the dash). We looked at adding a rear view cam etc and when we asked if it could be done they said ....Yup, come by tomorrow and we will have your new car ready.......The only bit it seems they did not have to replace would have been the wheels.......

Some cars just dont make sense for repairs. Know of a subaru that had problems with the cd stacker. It started by taking the seats out.... to access the clips to remove panels around gear selector and centre console which got access into the dash...

you dont need to take the seats out to get the main stereo out in a subaru, you will find however that if its a "mcintosh" stereo the amp is under the passenger seat. repaired a few and it takes about 30-40 minutes to get the stereo out at most

Dropped this off to garage for a friend, came past an hour later and the seats were out... guess its makes sense if amp is underneath. I figured it gave them more room to work in.

Im sure you will have already looked at them but location of filters in the engine bay for changing the buggers

Hadn’t thought about the steering wheel controls. Might be easier to mount another stereo and mute existing one. Nz cars aren’t a problem, but not as many suitable around. Had an import a while back, and all I could get the display to do was draw random lines on it.
I’ll be having a yarn with a couple of local sparkies as well, they should know which ones are easy to do, and ones to avoid.

generally steering wheel control is a single wire input, from memory blue-white stripe
pretty much universal. whats the original vehicle. inc make model year and post a pic

I purchased a BMW 40d M Sport thought great bugger no Bluetooth so went to BMW and the usual suspects shocking quotes some in the thousands fiber optic cables and all.

Found the Anker SoundSync I think I paid $30.00 Ebay anyhow plugged the two plugs in set the sound system to auxiliary bingo $30.00 phone and music all Bluetooth.

Depends entirely on what type of car mate. Have you got any specifics in mind?
