Oops... That looked like a cockup.

Yeah total pain in the arse for mine - what it's doing is the sensor output voltage which should be a rock stable 5.00v is wavering between 4.94v or less to 5.06v or more - this is compounding on all of the sensors from the voltage variability (it's fluctuating multiple times a second and as all the sensors are voltage based it's throwing all of the sensor readings out which means the PCM doesn't know which way to adjust the control valves) and this is causing random limp modes and check powertrain lights to come up without lodging a DTC. Made it bloody hard to diagnose what was causing it and local ford's answer was start swapping parts out like injection pump, common rail, injectors, in tank lift pump and tank level sender (four of those so far) but that wasn't the issue. Ford should have fixed it under warranty but by them failing and walking away from it it's been left to me to sort. Useless really.

If I had a usb-obdII link cable I'd download Forscan and do the thing myself. Luckily I have a spare hack at the mo so having the Ford out to pasture isn't too much of a problem.

    "New Cars" is right!
First Gen Raptor spat the torque converter at about 20,000kms.
Under warranty, John Andrew wanted to replace the auto, but Ford made them rebuilt things.
3 visits later, with me threatening to park it thru the front door & let the lawyers sort it if it wasn't fixed this time they finally relaced all that auto stuff.
I've got the Gen 2 Raptor with the petrol turbo V6 now which is an awesome truck.
But I wouldn't want to own it out of warranty, given how much is going on under the bonnet.
Looking at retiring, so won't be spending 100K on a truck every 3 years, so I'm thinking next move maybe GU Patrol, or something all mechanical without the high-strung drama all this new stuff has.

@Maca49 - well I did the WoF. Passed on driveshaft and gearbox/diff etc - but they flagged both lower balljoints as requiring replacement shortly. Hmm - probably right, feels a bit wobbly up front but man, balljoints crapping out in less than 135Km's??? Bollocks to that.

Will get onto that shortly once we finish replacing sensors - changed out the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) which turned into a major requiring 4 different programs and 3 different types of scan tool as the auto programs both failed and the module wipe and self-learn cycles didn't take either. Guys had to manually go through each module and get it to play nice and talk with everything else, still have a couple of glitches with the ICM and BCM/PATS modules but it seems to be running. What replacing that has shown is that there are several sensors that are not working correctly on this ute (including the throttle body which is jammed at 3.71v) so slowly going through and replacing everything that needs it as we find it. What is proving fun is tracking down these little critters when Ford is saying delivery is held up or no longer supplied OEM, little bit frustrating and a lot of time on the devices.

Funny you should mention that. Our near neighbour ( retired cockie) was telling me yesterday that it's a common issue and the latest directive from GM is to change the trans oil / TC every 75,000km now, not the originally-specified 150,000km. His has done 72,000 and he has it booked in to have it done himself rather than waiting for a problem.

The other symptom is the revs increasing/decreasing as the torque converter locks up and unlocks. Ours was doing this at 65,000.
Also shuddered badly under hard acceleration.
$1400 dollars later for diagnosis full transmission flush and seems better now, hopefully that's all it is.................

Reading all the dramas people are having getting modern trucks to work reliably and with longevity, I will opt for the 'pureeing' 4.2tdi every time. About two wires going to the engine, and with a bit of Macgivering I reckon it could work OK with none.

Have just ticked over 3000km towing the boat from Taupo to the bottom of the west coast and back up, exploring all sorts of 4wd tracks to get the boat into the water and out again. Crunched the numbers and the 530,000km GU Patrol is returning 12.9L/100km. Whats not to like?

I wont be changing my 93 Pajero anytime soon, it may be 30+ years old and rattly and done 330k km's, but its a bloody sight more robust and reliable given how it gets treated compared to wifes Colorado which cost a bomb in service costs and need trans service before 100000km. Shit the Pajero got its first trans service at 240K Kms and that wasn't the issue it had a rooted TPS.

And the beauty of all that is, when it finally shits itself, you can leave it where it is

I wouldnt. Even dead they are still worth good money.

Shes a good old beast alright Simon. Thats what you get when you combine ample displacement / torque with a low stress motor with huge oil pan.

Lots of lazy power with lots of clean oil = long life.

I can only hope that I do that well with my cruiser. 161k now no issues. Mine sounds better than yours though!

They apparently need a triple flush if it's gone full distance. Wouldn't help the cost.

Those ancient patrols/safaris can do anything except reach the open road speed limit.
