- Snorkel brand: sounds like Safari are gold standard with a price tag to suit - are the cheaper alternatives sufficient or best to go with the known brands?

You don't need the best brand out there. After all they are is a plastic tube!! Thats why some 4WD boys just use some bits of straight stain;less pipe and some flexible rubber elbows and pipe clamps. mine was about $150 off trade me and I have parked next to others with the safari brand snorkels and found them to be identical except for the brand name embossed on the side.
