    Fishing/Dive boat options

Had a change of heart from buying a jetboat to buying a family type boat, (been saving for a while) especially since the cook thought having a jetboat in my case at least, was a tad selfish and the family would see little of it.
    She is probably/normally right.
To keep her happy I have decided for now, to look at bigger boats.
I am thinking 5-6m boat and it has to be easily towable due to where we live.
We used to have a 440 Kiwicraft. I didnt like it much. (To small imo, unless only a couple were fishing/diving out of it.)

Ramco, Fyran and McClay boats seem to be well priced and well setup and my cup of tea. Stabi's are nice, but way overpriced and lack deckspace in 5-6m class boats due to the design imo.
It will be mainly used on lakes around home for the odd salmon, trout and perch. Water skiing and biscuit for the kids.

It will see heaps of Jacksons bay for diving, blue cod and bluenose and up the Sounds and Nelson area for snaps and scolly's.
Yarning with JoshC has even got me keen on maybe taking it to Stewy once or twice.
Keen to hear from you out there that run 5-6m boats, what motors you run (4 or 2 stroke) and why.

    Cheers

I have a 12 year old 6.6m Southern Sportz, Cuddy Cabin and 150 Yamie 2 Smoke on the back. Its a good boat but a little trim sensitive. Have a very fine entry. Over all a good boat if somewhat over equipped in the electronics dept If you are up this way I would be more than happy to take you for a spin.

I spose seeing marine electronics is your job the electronics in your boat could select the best snaps before you catch them?
That would be cool Mikee. I think we will be getting a cuddy cabin boat. I would like a 4 stroke honda or yamaha but is there any advantage in having one other than noise and economy?

Trim sensitive in the cruise? You would have the trim, pre-sussed/set for all scenarios?

Alloy mono hulls can be a bit sensitive compared to a same sized glass boat but they are lighter and more robust. People moving around while on the crusie can have an effect. Stabies and other pontoon boats don't have this issue so much. I have a mate with a 7.5m Southern, I brought his old boat, Another with a 6,9m one and another mate has a 6.5m McClay. I am sure I could get you a look over them too
    Heres mine

hey.. for a decent good quality SAFE family boat I would have a look at the fyran horizon range. 530 and 560 m. nice and light been around for ever, and have a good name. soft riding and user friendly. check out their website. I would go two stroke yammy 90 horse, tried and tested outboard as well. four stroke are ok but expensive and heavy. two stroke has the power when you need it fast. anyway that's what I would look at. my father in law had one, it was great.

My 2 cents is you want 115-150 horse on a 6m+. A 90 will do it most of the time but with a bit of gear and guys on board and some adverse weather it will really struggle and it will suck tanks dry at an alarming rate.
Also in the Yamaha range at least you don't get efi until over 90 horse twostroke.

I've got a 566 sea nymph executive with a 2 stroke 130 hp Johnson v4 all and an 8 hp aux 1999, owned it about 11 yrs now, very beamy, plenty of room, never visit a boat shop now as no need. All navman electronics. Very easy handling.
Mate had a fi glass lightning with a 100 Yama 4 stroke couldn't wait to get rid of it bad stability, he's got a 7 metre huntsman now and that's a nice unit,.
If I could afford a 4 stroke I'd go that way, they lacked power on take off but seem to have that sorted, but no noise and no fumes in a following wind.
When buying a motor there's only one thing that's important HP, don't under power as you'll just be pissed off
    That's my 2 cents worth

Just to prove we are not all fair weather boaters here's a video of 2 of my mates Jigging at Stephens Is for kingis in less than ideal conditions
    Boat is a McLay 650 with a 150 Yamaha 4 Stroke.

Th owner of this boat replaced the 150 with a 250 last year as his 150 had done over 500 hours in 3 years. They like their fishing they do

I must admit its not my idea of a fun day out boat is about 70m too small for that weather to my liking
