I would go galvanised over paint any day but it depends upon what the item is and its use and whether rust upsets you.
Over the years I have made various implements for my tractor eg transport tray, and have always had them galvanised. Paint finish just doesn't hack it with the knocking around they get. However, with them, if painted, a bit of rust doesn't really matter.
Recently made up two 25mm hollow section steel framed doors for my hay shed. Used galved hollow section so only bits subject to rust were the welds. Was no way practical, or necessary, to send the frames away to be galvanised.
I protected the welds with a good industrial primer (Altex) followed by a quality topcote.
My nearest town for me that had a galvanising plant was Pukekohe but that ceased some time ago. Last time I needed something down Puke took the item and sent to Hamilton. Then only sent it once that had a reasonable load to go. Getting pricey at that point and a delay getting my item back. Don't see me getting anything else done in the near future.
