I got a small carbon steel knife off the website Bushlife NZ it is the MoraKniv Companion HD fixed blade with a sheath made in Sweden. It's easy to sharpen.
I dissected a possum with it this morning for the dogs to have a play with it and i like it.

Some of the suggestions are trending towards smallish folding knives at over $100 - I'm not sure if that's what the OP is looking for, but if it is I'll throw in a suggestion for a Victorinox Hunter XT. Has the bonus of an excellent gutting blade and a good sized woodsaw.

I carry a Fallkniven F1 in my hunting pack, and sometimes it doesn't even come out of it's sheath because I've already done the whole job with the Hunter XT on my belt.

I like my Gerber drop point folders a lot, but don't use them much anymore. Would agree, they are not particularly small or cheap. Good knives though and would serve as a main hunting knife. I've found they are easy to get razor shark, but lose their edge after about one large animal.

Before anyone asks...No, it is not a real Benchmade and No, it is not SV30, but for $40 they are pretty good.

A 5 inch or 13cm curved boner from victory will set you back about $30 and will do 90% of what you need to do, a piece of pvc pipe heated and sealed at the bottom and fitted for a sheath, done
