Thanks mate. I've found a few images online comparing the two. You're right though, nothing beats getting your hands on. I've learnt that through years of buying guns and fishing rods! Heart says the little one, brain says the bigger one!

Honestly I don't think you would be disappointed with either.

Svord all day long bud. As for Blade length. I have processed a deer with pocket knife with 5cm blade.... It worked but a longer blade makes it easier. I've done a sheep with same small knife just cause I could.

Svords are nice, don't get me wrong, I own a few, but the stainless steels far outperform the carbon steels in all aspects these days.

Horses for courses....I hate stainless knives with a passion. Find them mongrels to get sharp to begin with and maintain afterwards. A softer hicarbon just works for me and the svords aren't soft....

Have you tried any of the modern stainless?

A young local guy makes knives he's only 16 and makes an awesome knife.

Don't know if it's what you're wanting but I've one of these, really nice knife and I've used it to field dress fallow no worries, the 4" blade might seem small but it'll handle taking the head off, cutting the arse out and everything in between, sharpens up to razor sharp without much effort...but then I'm fastidious about keeping my blades sharp and they get a lick after every use and during if needs be

I took one of my little bird and trout knives with a 7cm blade on a trip just to give it a go and they are surprisingly capable. Have since done a heap of deer with that same knife.

For skinning, quartering and basic field butchery tasks you barely notice the shorter blade. Main areas a longer blade is nice is working around the pelvis on a larger back leg, longer blade helps get a better angle to pick up all of the rump, and is faster boning out. Shorter blade is mint for skinning and opening cuts.

You probably wouldn't notice it at all on a goat or pig sized animal.

All that said, why not go a bit bigger? Save you worrying about it. 10cm is pretty much the ideal balance imo.

Try some aebl, nitro v, 14c28n. All super fine grained and very easy to hone & sharpen. Tough as also.

This is at the top of my 7cm regardless–of–price wish list, but availability is variable and unlikely for an upcoming birthday if wanting to be in possession of such a thing on the day.
