    If you ever activate one, NEVER switch it off and on thinking you are saving battery power. As Moutere stated, PLB's are designed to transmit for a minimum of 24 hours and so once activated not only the satellite needs to pick up your signal, but the PLB also transmits a VHF signal for the chopper overhead and the LandSAR ground trackers.
