Thread: Show me your knives

With respect to knives and sheaths. How many good practicle sheaths do you see know when buying a new blade. Most of the ones I have seen lately are not too flash.

I make my own now and while they are as ugly as sin they do the job

Very nice B. Did you ever play stretch on the lawn with my old mans pig sticker? That was a knife that had a lot of sentimental value as it was made for dad by my uncle Terry and it played a large part in our youth (holes all over the wood shed wall at Collington and Melrose). None of us know where it is these days.

Nope, didn't play that game..didn't realise you guys were in Colinton Pl.? Sal and I drove up the street on our way home from the Sika Show, what a shithole!!, and the block of shops at the bottom was vacant and burnt out. Used to be a dairy, grocer, butcher and a thrift shop there.(after school job......used to deliver Friday meat order to Jack and Dolly in a Morris van).

Back to knives, as kids we were playing in wrecked houses somewhere and I found a small Bowie style knife, the brand was Koh-i-Noor ( named after a 793 carat uncut diamond found in India).
In NZ, Koh-i-Noor was a brand of knife made here in the 60's and 70's by a chap who emigrated from the Czech Republic. Muldoon's duties and tariffs on imported steel ruined the company. Brian Baker who owns Svord learned his skills as a cutler from the old chap. I always hankered after a double edged Koh-i-Noor sticker that was in Torchy Moores Sport Store in Tok. Brain tidied the knife up for me a while ago and offered me good money for it.......son James has claimed it tho......

Jeez B your memory is fading. We were at number four and from memory you were over the fence at number two. I also took a nostalgia trip around Tok after the Sika show and saw the same ghetto. Was the butcher you worked for Peter Campbell?

Forgot you moved from #4 to Melrose. Yep, Peter Campbell was the butcher, he also had a milk round, me and your brother Pete used to run/push the trolleys around the streets, got bloody fit with 6 milk crates on board.

Yeh Huk and I both pushed milk for him before you and Peter. Damn that was a lifetime ago.

Rushy write a book for your kids, most important because your an old fart and before you kark you need to past those memories down in hard copy!

Has anyone bought one of those forged Damascus steel knives around the 60 buck mark off trademe..? Want something forged as they stay much sharper and are stronger in my experience with chefs knives.

Carbon steel is bloody good my victory is as sharp as id care to have a knife. Have to oil it after use to avoid rust though.

What do you want the knife for? If a general purpose hunting knife try one of these, im a little bias, I have one and I use it more than any other knife I have

That look quite nice. Just after an all round field knife for skinning and boning out. If got ok flick knife at the moment but I definitely want a fixed blade this time.

Has anyone got or tried a Havalon knife? I think I would end up cutting my hand off with one (meant to be scary sharp since they use scalpel blades) but I am tempted to try one...

One of the most versatile knives in my collection, and the one I grab first when it comes to boning and cutting up meat is the Duel DKH023 SlimLine Boner ( http://204.42.158.162/product.htm ). The shape of the blade is such that you can skin an animal, but it is bloody brilliant for boning and processing meat once it's off the bone. The steel is pretty good, holds its edge well and is easy to sharpen. Once sharp, a strop will keep the edge in tune for a couple of animals worth of processing.
