    UHF radio recomendations

I'm looking to buy a couple of handheld uhf's. I presume 5watt is the go.

What do you guys recommend ??

Ones to buy/ones to stay away from.

    Cheers

The 5W versions will certainly give you a bit more punch but they're still line of sight.

I prefer the Uniden radios myself but the GME radios are just as good, are generally cheaper and I hear their repair service is better. I've not had any occasion to use the Uniden repair service so I can't comment either way. Then there's the Garmin Rhino's, which are also good but I think their menu navigation is hard work. On the plus side, all of these units are frequency compatible.

I look forward to hearing from a couple of the others. @gadgetman ?

Real guns start with the number 3 or bigger and make two holes, one in and one out

I have two 5W Uniden and two Kenwood. Batteries are now basically buggered so looking to either upgrade or sell. Comparable between them all and of them all the Kenwood are my favourite for power and compactness.

Have a GME in my truck and 2w hand held in the glovebox and also 2 Uniden 2W units in my hunting gear. 5W are good but heavy (relative to 2W units)
I really like the ICOM Base units but they are expensive (their PRS units are not sold in NZ) their advantage is they can be jiggered with to boost the Tx above 5W which is a bit naughty really

All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

I recently bought a tradie pack of two 5 watt unidens with plenty of extras, they seemed to work well on out last hunt but I don't like the belt clip (always falling off) so you need to attach them to a lanyard. They are nice and clear but when you put the external mic on they aren't so clear. They seem to have a good range and worked when I was way down in a gully, I don't think you could go too far wrong with them. Motorola are the best and we use them at work however they are very expensive. Hope this helps.
