    Yup I come from coal mining and there is heaps of different gases you can get.
    Usually stone drives not so bad but decomposing wood and timber etc can produce some and at the least you could have Carbon dioxide down there.

    I will also add stone drives nowhere near coal reserves. If there is coal around, any gasmake from the coal is likely to be present.

    Light a candle and biff that down the shaft before you go - if it goes out or there is a big explosion, don't go in
