No, because of all the idiots that would rip up the grass flats, leave all their rubbish/targets behind, DOC have now made it a no hunting area on the flats. No discharging of a firearm is permitted.

Cheers. Seems like it is just the designated ranges left then! Was planning to go out and zero rifles with a mate this weekend but will have to wait until ranges have public days

Something to note when looking at docmaps website.
If you select open hunting areas the prohibited areas are red.

If you select "open hunting areas" and "public conservation land"

The prohibited areas become brown like in the first photo showing "open hunting areas". Be careful not to select both and end up hunting a prohibited area.

Basically without getting into all he ins and outs.

You are allowed to sight in a rifle on doc land say if you are checking during a hunt or you droped your rifle, but letting off 10 rounds up the river bed is a nono.
All ranges have to be certified by the police now and inspected regularly.

If you need to sight in your rifle pm me I can probably help you out as I have access to NZDA.

A shooting range as specified by the legislation.

    shooting range—
    (a)
means a facility (whether indoor or outdoor), or a designated area of land, used by a shooting club or members of the public for the primary purpose of carrying out shooting activities; and

Sighting in on a mates farm is still ok.

Reloaders or NCDA have ranges just behind Chch airport a couple of ks.Cost a lot less for a hr or 2 than driveing all the way out to L Lyndon. And you get to keep yr FAL.
I got interviewed(referee) for a renewal of somebody elses fal last week.
They said the police will come down hard on anyone who abuses the rigth to have a fal.

Jings, there is always the Ashburton Range if you need to zero, think they got out to 600m too. You can get hold of the range officer for shooting anytime you need.
