About to get my license, can't wait to get to the range and out hunting

    Hi all,

Wanted to introduce myself, I'm based in Christchurch and currently just waiting for my vetting stage. I have my safe all bolted down and ready for inspection.

I'm aiming to join the local range as a member and get out and join a NZDA hunts course once I have my first rifle, I am aiming for a Tikka 308 from Gun City but I am totally open to suggestions for Deer and a good all rounder.

    Welcome

North Canterbury NZDA have a range in CHCH, so you can do the HUNTS course and get range time with the same organisation.

Welcome aboard. Although I do not own a Tikka or a .308, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the direction you are headed in.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

    Welcome (as a fellow trainee)!

I have followed the advice to focus the spend on optics, and happily accept any of the usual calibres (.308 fits that bill). People speak really well of the Tikka too.

I was told this by the guy at Gun City as well, he said to spend pretty much the same amount of the gun on the optic. Sounds painful to the wallet but makes sense, no point skimping out just to spend more money to upgrade

Welcome. As a newbie myself, there's nothing quite like feeding friend's and family with fresh meat that you got yourself. Don't skimp on optics. everyone is right. Quality only hurts once.

Buy once, cry once. Of course that is a fallacy as you will buy several times as the addiction takes hold.
