Only exception I've heard of (on this forum I think) was where the "vehicle" was in fact a house truck in which the FAL holder lived, but there are also cases of an AO declining to approve storage in such a vehicle. Such is the nature of discretion.

Unfortunately I think you're right, at least in that it would be a darn struggle. As others have said, it's pretty ridiculous that there's no possible way to leave a firearm in a vehicle... it's done all the time in Canada and there are no mass thefts or problems... just means you don't have to live in close orbit of your car or carry a gun around and risk getting shot by the police or charged with causing a public disturbance (which does happen when people legally carry their cased firearms from the car to house).
