Disassemble the water pump. At that age the rubber impeller (if not serviced) may well have decided to return to its origins and have become bits of rubber.

They are OK. I sit an additional light on top looking in. The trick (essential) is to have a very good vacuum hooked up to it and things will remain clear as day in there. Oh and a good water trap.
