Going along with what some have said about being ready I will add my two cents, I like to be religious about always having a sharp knife, lite pack and some bits of cord for tying up the different bits of animal to make it easier to carry, (or for those that like to field dress, some plastic bags).
And always be confident that your rifle is shooting straight and you know the POI.
If you are properly prepared for having one on the deck, there will be less lingering doubt about putting one on the deck, sometimes the second guessing is enough to let the animal get away.
Not being properly prepared also helps with making excuses to be lazy and not hunt like you mean it.
The pack on the way in should not be more than 10kgs,30kgs on the way out.
You don't drink while doing a 7 hour hike? I'd prefer not to get giardia while in the bush.
Identify your target beyond all doubt because you never miss (right?) and I'll be missed.
Just remember, this is a thread for a beginner hunter!
Knowing what to take, and knowing how to cope with less gear only comes with experience. We all probably started off carrying too much stuff and slowly whittled it down.
(Also remember what you take depends on where you are hunting, e.g. SI tahr hunting needs different gear to NI bush stalking).
Thanks. A good list. Something to shoot for
