GSP Cross Mutt, anyone had any experience?

Hi guys, Im have been offered a "hunting pup" its mother was a purebred GSP but the father is a mutt, i have been offered it for free, im wondering if anyone has some knowledge in this area, id love a hunting companion but i simply cannot afford a purebred, but im just a little worried the dog wont perform, any success stories out there with a Cross breed for hunting deer?

my current bitch is gspXlab dad labXbeardie mum and she is a corker (well is to me anyway) spent the day wandering around behind her and we managed to put up a couple of deer in trying conditions today (swirly winds are bain of our existance) the old dog we had a few years back was gsp/lab and she also was an awesome hunting dog..... two things.GSP=WHINE and GSP=COLD keep them warm and dont let the whinge start...tell your Mrs "the dog is not friggin talking" shut it up. and you should be fine .my previous bitch was gsp/huntaway and she was a great companion, retrieved all my ducks n geese, harrassed many wallabies and tagged along on the odd deerstalk.
bottom line is that if you say YES you have the next 10-12 years with dog...make it work. if nothing else teach dog to walk quietly at heal,at least you have help to find dead animal.

Its all about the time you put in. plenty of people have used mutts before all the new fashion dogs. You still need to train all the basic's.It might not lock up on a point but it will give you a indication. The big thing is getting it used to guy fire when training it.
Also you are better learning your mistakes on a mutt then a $1500 pup. My current dog is a lab/pointer x heading dog. Bit to much strong eye heading dog for my liking.

Cross breeds are most times less highly strung, I have found them really easy to train and less timid. I have had a few over the years and would not exchange them for money or man. Have had a GSP Lab cross, one of my best dogs over the years, a all rounder. Upland game, ducks, deer and cattle dog and a best friend. @KaneB do you know what breed the mutt was ?.

Give it a go. If it doesn’t preform after a year or so I’ll take it of your hands.
