The carbine is basically a shortened rifle.

The original Magazine Lee Enfield rifle MLE (aka Long Tom) had a 30.2-inch (770 mm) barrel.
The SHORT MLE had a 25.2 inches (640 mm) barrel but was still called a rifle.
In between, the MLE derived Lee–Enfield Cavalry Carbine Mk I, or LEC, had a 21.2-inch (540 mm) barrel.

All pretty subjective. I suspect most modern hunting rifles nowadays would fall into the carbine category. Less advantage of a long sight radius if you have optical sights, or if stalking bush pigs (optical or iron sights).

I suppose you have a carbine once your rifle is so short and handy it does not catch on stuff all the time.
