    First AR reccomendations

    Hi guys

I am new to this forum and and I am about to start the process of obtaining my ecat licence because of my great uncle pushing me into joining his club for competition shoots and whatnot, as well as being invited along to do rabbit culling on sheep ranches down south with some friends of his a couple of times a year, where these guys go through at least 250-500 rounds of ammo per day/walk each!

I have been trying to pre select an AR (ecats) from spending countless hours researching on the net and talking to guys I know and from what I have found my favored rifle is a Heckler and Koch MR223/MR556 which is the civilian version of the h&k 416 adopted by military groups across the world.

    I also have looked into

    Lewis machine and tools platform
Tavor (read bad things on accuracy though)
    Ruger sr556?
    North Eastern Arms ar15 platform

I'm more interested in piston ARs and not Direct impingement while also steering clear of knockoff rifles like the CJA/rangers guncity is selling.

Money isn't too much of an issue hence why I am so interested in H&K products as they are reputed to be one of the best (if not the best) for quality rifles, however I will not pay $7000 for the MR223 gun city has in stock as I had my uncles range friend quote me a private single import at huge reduction in guncity's price (still alot more than it should be) The rifles retails anywhere from 2800 - 3300USD new so the 7000 price is a robbery!

Thanks in advance for the ideas!
    Macca

ASI ultra match? Check out my one for sale.

Piston AR's can be prone to overheating, so are often made with larger tollerances to compensate for expansion. The piston can cause accuracy issues, so most serious competition AR's are still direct gas to BCG. The piston ones run cleaner...but its kind of like trying to solve a problem that didnt need solving.

I have always been of the opinion that if you want piston don't get an AR. Maybe a SIG55x would be another option?

I am led to believe the HK's use a lot of proprietary parts unlike most all other ARs. Not a good thing

Buy (or build) a good one.

LMT would be my choice from your list. However I would prefer a JP or build it myself. I built a goodie.

Buy a factory Daniel Defense gun from Digit when he gets them. Good quality solid milspec direct impingement gun, reliable, you'll never have a problem with it if you maintain it vaguely correctly, standard AR pattern so full parts compatibility for spares, etc.
    Happy and grunzter like this.

Yeah I would love my gun to jam in a firefight....

The civilian market is not why they changed to piston.

How to annoy a H&K engineer - Ask them what this is circled in red, and follow up asking why it it is there?

Macca I would forget about getting a Tavor. They are too short to qualify as E-Cat.
I have a Schmeisser, German made AR.

Google Robert Whitely from the States and see what he says about piston AR's.Stoner told the military years ago...cleanliness is next to a fully functioning rifle. If you want to see developments in the AR field checkout IMI.Their daily life depends on them killing those mad Arab's.
